History: Edward was born in Chicago in 1918 to Edward Anthony Masen and Elizabeth Masen. When he was 17, he was hospitalized along with his parents due to the 1918 outbreak of Spanish influenza. His parents died shortly after, and he was on his deathbed when a strange blonde doctor named Carlisle Cullen approached him and bit him. He was in agonizing pain for three entire days, but when the pain subsided, he wasn’t dead. He had become a vampire.

After that, Carlisle raised him as a son. Edward believed that he had become a monster, but he still strove to follow Carlisle’s peaceful way of life. At first it was hard, and in a fit of rebellion he left Carlisle and began to hunt the vermin of society. Eventually, his conscience began to reject this way of life and he returned to the Cullen coven. He and Carlisle were soon joined by Esme, Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper, and Alice, and Edward adapted to the vegetarian lifestyle.

Until one day, when mysterious Bella Swan moved to Forks and threw his life into turmoil. Her blood smelled better than anything in the world to him, and it took every ounce of self control for him to not kill her as soon as he saw her. To avoid temptation, Edward moved to Alaska with the Denali Coven, but eventually decided to go back to Forks and attempt to withstand temptation. His strength paid off, and eventually he fell in love with Bella, who was as enthralled by him as he was by her.

After saving her life from the tracker vampire James, Edward began to believe that it was possible for the two of them to have a relationship, though he always knew there would be a certain amount of danger for Bella to be around so many vampires. After Jasper almost attacked her on her birthday, however, he decided it was too dangerous for her to have the Cullens (and their enemies) in her life. He lied to Bella and told her he didn’t want her anymore, in order to protect her life, which was more important to him than getting to be with her. However, this decision made him miserable, and he spent the resulting months curled up in a ball in South America.

Edward had finally made the decision to return to Forks when a distressing phone call came from his sister Rosalie, telling him that Bella had died. He called Bella’s house to make sure, and a deep male voice answered telling him that Charlie was at “the funeral.” This pain was worse than the pain he had experienced when he had become a vampire- it was the worst pain he had ever experienced. He flew to Italy, deciding to ask the Volturi to take his life. Even if there was no afterlife for monsters like him, he couldn’t bear to live without Bella in his world.

The Volturi denied his request, deciding he was too valuable to just kill. In despair, Edward decided to expose himself in the middle of the main square (no, not that way), in order to force the Volturi to get rid of him. Just in the nick of time, however, Bella appeared- she wasn’t dead after all. Filled with relief at just seeing her alive again, Edward returned to Forks for good, having promised the Volturi to change Bella into a vampire.

Before he and Bella could reach a resolution about turning her into a vampire, however, James’ mate Victoria began to hunt her. He was forced to partner with Jacob Black- his natural enemy, as well as the werewolf who had been hitting on Bella in Edward’s absence- and the rest of his pack in order to destroy Victoria, but only at great personal cost to Bella, who almost lost Jake’s friendship forever. Despite the emotional drama, Victoria was defeated, and Edward and Bella were free to proceed with their wedding plans.

Edward and Bella were finally married, though the wedding brought more drama and trouble. Having finally consummated their marriage, the two were surprised to discover that Bella had become pregnant. The half-human, half-vampire baby caused his wife to waste away almost to the point of death, and as he watched the love of his life dying before his eyes, he was forced to change her into a vampire himself in order to save her.

Afterwards, he and Bella and their daughter Renesmee adapted to life together surprisingly easily. Living in the cottage Esme built their small family, they soon grew quite happy. The Volturi ruined everything as usual, showing up to try and kill Renesmee. Luckily, the Cullens and their vampire friends were able to talk the Volturi out of it, and the Cullen family was finally able to live in peace. For the time being, anyways…

Personality: With his impeccable manners and a charming disposition, Edward is truly a “modern” gentleman. Though he may seem intimidating because of his intense, focused attitude and his seriousness, he is a very polite, friendly person. He can be very protective of his loved ones, especially his wife Bella and their daughter Renesmee, even to the point of rage. When he makes up his mind to do something, he commits to it fully and with forceful determination. Edward can also be slightly old fashioned when it comes to his manner of speaking and his actions, because of the way he was raised.

Edward has the talent of mind-reading, and can read the thoughts of everyone except for Bella, unless she projects her shield away from her. He is also the fastest runner in his family. Because he has had so much free time over the years, Edward has developed a talent at playing the piano and composing music beautifully, especially his lullaby for Bella. His musical taste is quite eclectic, ranging from classical to indie rock to fifty’s music. Edward also enjoys cars, and has several incredible automobiles himself.

Appearance: Like most vampires, Edward is breathtakingly beautiful with pale marble skin that sparkles in sunlight. He has dark bronze hair that usually has a messy, windswept look that many high school boys have tried to copy unsuccessfully. While a human, he had emerald green eyes, but after his transformation into a vampire they turned a deep golden color. When he is thirsty, they change to dark black. With his sharp, angular looks and his graceful way of moving, he tends to attractive lots of females.

Special ability: Edward has the ability to read almost anybody’s thoughts. The only exception to this, to date, is his wife Bella. However, if she projects her shield away from herself he is able to read her mind briefly.

Roleplay Sample: The turbulence around the airplane was shaking the entire cabin and throwing Edward back into his seat, but it was something he was used to by now. He’d been flying since, well, since airplanes were invented. Anyone looking at him would think that he was scared to death of flying, however- he looked simply terrified. His hands were gripping the arms of the chair so hard that he honestly came close to breaking them at one point. The truth of the matter was something quite different than a simple fear of flying, however. For the first time in his life, Edward Cullen was scared to death.

How could he bear to lose her now? Now, after everything they’d gone through to be together? He knew he was giving her exactly what she wanted, and to some small degree that comforted him. But what if things went wrong? She was so human, so fragile… so breakable. One wrong move- he could hardly bear to think what the consequences could be. But he had promised, just as she had promised something very important to him. With a smile, he looked down at the small golden band around his ring finger.

Right now, he was so blissfully happy that there was barely enough room for the terror that filled him at the thought of what he had promised- but it was still there. As Bella shifted in the seat next to him, her head on his shoulder, he was filled with guilt. This should be the happiest day of his life- well, of his existence. The day that he and Bella had finally been joined together as man and wife… how many times had he thought about this over the past two years?

It felt unreal, as if he were in a dream. He couldn’t possibly be on his way to his honeymoon with the love of his life- he couldn’t possibly deserve this. And yet here he was, sitting next to the most wonderful creature he had ever met. If he did something tonight to take that away- well, he couldn’t continue existing in this world. Still, the flight had another hour and a half left, an hour and a half before he had to worry about this. He would just cross that bridge when he came to it. When it was the only thing that the love of his life wanted, the one thing she wanted before she was choosing to become a vampire, how could he say no?
